In the book Living Better with Lactose Intolerance: The Practical Guide to Understanding, Reintroducing, and Enjoying Dairy Products, I spent hours poring over thousands of cheeses and dairy products to build a summary table that truly holds up. And the result is surprising: 76% of the cheeses among the 133 AOC, AOP, and PGI designations referenced in the European Union show a lactose content of 0.5g per 100g or less. In other words, perfectly compatible with lactose intolerance. Not bad, right?

On the other hand, most other dairy products, creams, yogurts, all types of milk, are far too high in lactose for the vast majority of lactose-intolerant people. So we tread carefully.

Now, let's talk numbers, because this is where it gets really interesting. According to an EFSA study, people with lactose intolerance can generally consume between 6 and 12g per day, spread across three meals. The most sensitive individuals start experiencing symptoms from as little as 3g. But a dose of 1g per meal remains compatible with all forms of intolerance. Worth remembering.

Want a taste? A preview is available here : you'll receive directly the top 10 lowest-lactose cheeses among those analyzed in the book.

One important note: even between two cheeses sharing the same controlled designation, concentrations can vary from one producer to another. That's why the lactose.help app goes further by enabling analysis at the level of the product itself, rather than its designation. Far more precise, far more useful.

Unfortunately, the book is not currently available in French. You can vote for your preferred language on the dedicated page, you will then be notified upon its release.
